SDG board game - It's a small thing but useful
The Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism Library began curating exhibitions themed around the SDGs in 2019. These efforts extend the goals from physical spaces to promotional activities, educational utilization, cloud exhibitions, and board game design, aiming to lower the barriers for readers to understand the SDGs through everyday life.
"It's a small thing but useful" allows players to learn about the SDGs through interactive board games. The cute monsters in the game originated from a previously planned themed exhibition, "Legends and Monsters Reading Map." The librarians selected nine monsters and wrote stories about their presence on campus, incorporating the campus landscape. When these monsters entered "It's a small thing but useful," they were integrated with the concept of regional revitalization infused with the SDGs, connecting them to the local imagery of Kaohsiung. The game deepens the link between each monster and the corresponding SDG, assigns tasks to the nine monsters, and makes the game process more aligned with promoting the SDGs.
When discussing the SDGs, it’s easy to get influenced by the 17 goals and focus on individual targets. However, the essence of the SDGs is to emphasize improving human life, hoping that by 2030, both human life and the Earth will be prosperous and beautiful. Therefore, it’s not very meaningful to list each goal one by one. Instead, it’s more important to establish a lifestyle attitude. Our SDG board game "It's a small thing but useful" introduces SDG goals through small everyday matters, making it a simple, effective, and fun tool for promoting the SDGs.
Throughout the process of continuously improving the board game and promoting interactions, the librarians not only re-examined the meaning and impact of each goal but also gained a deeper understanding of the importance of promoting the SDGs. They realized how this endeavor could bring more impact and inspiration to teachers, students, and external players.
The board game will be officially released in 2024, and subsequent SDG promotional activities will continue. This will help more people understand that a sustainable lifestyle is the result of many small actions.
